The 1978 F1 World Champion Mario Andretti has supported Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Andretti Sr. is a fan of Hamilton’s abilities and has full trust in the Englishman’s competitiveness to retain his spot at the top of F1. Andretti is the father of Michael Andretti – the owner of Andretti Autosport, who was recently given the green light to be the 11th team in the F1 grid by the FIA.
He believes Hamilton will “return to the top” and fight for titles. The Italian-American also praised Mercedes’ hard work who are working day and night to improve the situation and thus provide the Brit the best car. He praised Hamilton’s talent to evolve and be ready for the next challenge constantly, and the next one can be a title fight.
He probably doesn’t feel that he has the equipment that he used to have a few years ago. If that’s all in the works, I’m sure. Everyone at Mercedes is working hard and trying to improve the situation, and there’s no question about his ability. No question.Andretti said via GPblog
Andretti believes Red Bull’s dominance will soon come to an end even before the regulation changes scheduled for 2026. He also said that not only Hamilton but the Ferrari and McLaren boys will become a point of struggle for the energy-drink brand.
“There’s going to be a fight. [...] I guarantee you that from the standpoint of Max Verstappen, he knows that things are not going to be the same always," .
Mario Andretti says he’s impressed by Fernando Alonso for his achievements at his age.
Mario Andretti also praised for the Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso. Alonso, who’s 42 years of age, has scored 7 podiums so far this season and overall collected 183 points for the team. Andretti also believes if given a proper reliable, and constant car, Alonso will always be around the top.
Alonso has only one out-of-point finish this season and has not even retired once. Andretti showed his delight in the Spaniard, saying,
But you have protagonists here who are capable. And don’t discount Fernando, Fernando is always there. I love the spirit that he has at this stage of his career.
Fernando is sitting P4 in the Drivers’ Standings before the Austin GP. He will try to catch the front-running Hamilton, who’s only 11 points ahead of him while defending from the Ferrari boys behind him.
