It had been smooth sailing for Ferrari and Mattia Binotto until the last Imola GP. This was supposed to be celebratory weekend for the Tifosi after what the team has achieved in the first three races of the season. But, sadly, it didn’t turn out to be that way for the Italian Giants as Carlos Sainz spun out of the race after a collision with Daniel Ricciardo going into the first corner and championship leader Charles Leclerc finishing a disappointing P6.

What made it worse was the sort of weekend Red Bull enjoyed. After their disappointment in Australia, the Milton Keynes had to react and so they did and how. It was a flawless weekend for the weekend with both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez securing a podium finish. Max Verstappen looked more of his usual self as he secured the maximum points from the sprint and race which saw him cut Charles Leclerc’s lead to 27 points.

Mattia Binotto has seen everything in the sport and he’ll understand it’s natural to have this sort of a bump in such a long season. He will know the importance of deducing issues and respond to it as quickly as possible. The Ferrari Team Principal should learn from how Red Bull responded to their disastrous weekend in Australian. Upgrades will be a key factor in the development of the car going into the business end of the season.

Mattia Binotto understands the assignment pretty well and as much he wishes to bring in upgrades, he also understands the limitations of a budget cap. He said, “We are only at race four. In the past seasons, not many cars were developed at race four. Our competitors have also only brought small developments.

“If I look at our competitors, [some] already brought some developments – some of them in testing, some of them [at Imola], and some, maybe small, developments from race one to race four, so I don’t think that, so far, it has changed much compared to the past.”

“The budget caps means that we cannot simply bring developments to every single race,” as reported by racingnews365.

Mattia Binotto understands the need for bringing in upgrades to their ever increasing porpoising issues but he also knows the importance of not playing all his cards at once. This can make a very interesting Miami GP.
