“They don’t like who is winning,” Max Verstappen speaks out after being booed by Red Bull fans over Miami GP victory
Max Verstappen remains unbothered despite being booed at the Miami GP.
Max Verstappen, Miami GP podium
Max Verstappen continues to dominate Formula 1. The reigning world champion won his third race of the season at the Miami GP despite starting from P9. The 25-year-old even out-paced teammate Sergio Perez for the lead. As the Mexican driver had no answer for the championship leader. Subsequently, the Dutchman was booed during the podium ceremony by Perez’s fans. Max has now finally spoken on this issue.
The two-time champion believed he would not face such backlash if he were not winning, as fans would not have booed a driver at the back of the grid. Verstappen said, “I think if I will be driving in the back nobody will be even doing anything in terms of reaction.” This reaction came after fans believed Red Bull aided the 25-year-old with a better strategy than Sergio Perez.
The Dutchman was convinced that such booing is not unusual in Formula 1. Drivers who win consistently are often criticized by fans. The 25-year-old explained, “I think it’s normal when you’re winning and they don’t like who is winning.” Multiple drivers have faced such reactions in the past including the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Booing is “absolutely fine” for Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen went as far as being unbothered by this backlash. The 25-year-old has been booed in the past as well. The Dutchman insists that winning the race counts for the reigning world champion. Continued, “This is something for me which is fine as long as I stand on the top; that’s for me the most important.”
The Dutchman didn’t mind fans booing him after a race. Max mentioned how, at the end of the day, he takes home the win while the fans go home after an exciting evening. He concluded, “I take the trophy home and they go back to their houses and they can have a nice evening.” On the other hand, some fans might remain disappointed as they saw Sergio Perez lose out on a race win.
Thus, Max Verstappen remains unbothered by booing in Formula 1. The 25-year-old aims to win in the sport and is glad to receive backlash if he stands on the top step. Certainly, this shows that the Dutchman is focused on winning while remaining unaffected by the discontentment of fans. The Red Bull driver hopes to carry on this success throughout the 2023 season.
