McLaren makes huge dent in Red Bull, poaches one of the biggest names in the team in a million-dollar move
McLaren have acquired a big shot engineer, Rob Marshall, from Red Bull, reviving the hopes of the fans about a better season ahead.
In 2020, McLaren had achieved a top-3 finish in the World Constructors’ Championship with 202 points, and were looking to be the next big thing in F1 in the following years. Unfortunately, three years later, the papaya is now dwelling in the lowest spots on the grid, with only 17 points to their name. The Woking-based team targeted a better position than their rivals, Alpine, in the current season. But now, after the first six races of this year, things do not look too bright for McLaren as Alpine have surpassed them in the rankings, thanks to Esteban Ocon‘s brilliant P3 finish in Monaco.
But McLaren are far from dejected at their constantly disappointing finishes in the Grands Prix. They have decided to look into ways to improve their team. Thus, in one of the biggest transfers of this year, McLaren have acquired a big shot engineer from the Red Bull squad. Rob Marshall, who previously served as the Director of Engineering at RBR, will be shifting to Zak Brown‘s squad as the Technical Director, in the field of engineering and design.
Rob Marshall had joined Red Bull in 2006, and for the last 17 years till now, he has played a massive role in designing the cars for the current Championship-holding team. Prior to his tenure at RBR, he was at Renault, helping them win Fernando Alonso’s 2005 title. Now, he will be present at McLaren to help the likes of Neil Houldey, to make the team into one of the biggest challengers for the F1 title, according to Andrea Stella.
Rob Marshall is all-set to join McLaren for the 2024 season: McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella
Rob Marshall’s hiring by McLaren for their Championship campaign for the next season has revived hopes for the papaya squad’s revival after some dismal results in the recent times. Andrea Stella has commented on the new recruitment, saying, “I am incredibly pleased that Rob is coming to McLaren. The addition of Rob is one of the fundamental steps to help the team return to winning ways . We are a team with the ambition to fight for titles.”
In other news, Lando Norris’ 2022 contract extension agreement has tied him to the team till 2025. But owing to the fact that McLaren does not seem competitive at all right now, some fans reckon the Briton will be looking to prematurely end his deal and severe ties with the team that has been his home for the last four years. Now, it remains to be seen whether Norris sticks to McLaren now that they have made some new acquisitions to aim for the top places in the upcoming seasons.
