‘Mercedes wanted to replace Lewis Hamilton with Fernando Alonso’

Aston Martin astonished the Formula One world by affirming Fernando Alonso as his substitute just days after 4-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel declared his retirement from the motorsport at the end of 2022. It implies that Alonso will exit Alpine and come back to a Mercedes-powered team for the very first time since 2007, when he was Lewis Hamilton’s rookie teammate at McLaren.
Hamilton appears to be completely dedicated to Formula One and Mercedes, with his achievements and outcomes improving as Mercedes attempts to regain lost ground following the regulation revamp. Hamilton’s agreement with the team runs through the end of 2023. However, Kravitz implied that if Hamilton retires in the coming years, would Mercedes desire Alonso to join a team under their control in order to get a more complete look at him?
Ted Kravitz gives his take on Fernando Alonso possibly returning to Mercedes sometime later in the future

Ted Kravitz“What it also does do is reunite Fernando with the Mercedes engine family, which I think is an interesting angle. Fernando hasn’t been powered by Mercedes since he left McLaren the first time round under a bit of a cloud 15 years ago.So, this would have needed a sign-off from Toto Wolff, which it obviously got. Is it ridiculous to think that Mercedes wanted Fernando back in their family just to see what he was like?,” asked Kravitz.
“Should Lewis decide he was to leave for whatever reason, and they need a world champion to put alongside George, would it not be the end of the world if Mercedes had a bit of visibility in what Fernando was like, even as a 41-year-old? You might have thought that was unlikely, but as this announcement proves – anything is possible in F1!,” concluded Kravitz.
At this point, the only established truth is that Alonso has signed a multi-year contract with Aston Martin, a team aiming for championship success in the coming years but currently trailing only Williams in the Constructors’ Championship. So, with Alonso presently 41 years old, Kravitz finds the situation “a bit odd.”
