Carlos Sainz has had a roller coaster of a year so far. From getting his first pole position to grabbing his maiden win in F1, he has achieved a lot but has also suffered defeat on multiple occasions. During his first year at Ferrari, the Spaniard managed to outwit Charles Leclerc to come out on top of the Monegasque driver in standings but this season was very different.
Compared to 2021 when Ferrari was still rebuilding itself, there was comparatively less pressure to perform and Carlos went on to impress the big wigs at the Scuderia. However this season was filled with failure and disappointment with both the driver and the team making mistakes on multiple occasions. No matter who was responsible for said mistakes, both the parties suffered as Max Verstappen and Red Bull already sealed both the championships with two races left.
Coming into his third season with Ferrari, Carlos Sainz wants more and he will stop at nothing to get it. Over the 2022 season, the Spaniard adapted well to the car with new regulations in place. However, it is obvious that he has only just now started to get a good understanding of this year’s challenger. He wants to make sure that this won’t be the case next season where the Ferrari driver wants to hit it from the ground running.

Here is what the Spaniard has to say as he reflected on his second season with Ferrari. “My goal is to become world champion one day. I hope that if there is a good car again next year, I will be able to be in the fight from the beginning.
I don’t have to lose control in the first part of the season, because I know that once I’m in the fight, I’m able to stay there. This will be the goal, we are working in Ferrari to return to having that car (seen in the first half of the year, nda) and to improve as a team, so that if the opportunity reoccurs next year, we will not let it escape,” he told AS compatriots.
Carlos Sainz has improved a lot this year and it is evident in his results but it is clear that it won’t be enough to win the championship. Max Verstappen and Red Bull didn’t always have the fastest car during a race weekend but when they did, full advantage was taken by the bulls. Ferrari had the car and they proved it on Saturdays but failed to demonstrate it on Sundays.
Sainz described the progress that he made as a driver. “There are things I’m happy with this year, for example I’ve improved a lot after a rather difficult start. I’m proud of this, but the season had a difficult start and although I then picked up pace, every two or three races something happened that didn’t allow me to find continuity,” he said.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have to up their game in order to be title contenders y next season

With the gap between Leclerc and Sainz being 63 points, it doesn’t seem like the Spaniard is gonna outscore the #16 driver this year. However what he can do is help him in his pursuit for P2 in the championship which is against Sergio Perez. It is absolutely crucial that both the drivers co-operate and bring it home for the Scuderia after what has been a really gruelling season.
In his first year as a championship contender, Carlos Sainz has a lot to learn and so does Charles Leclerc. Currently their main goal will also include securing P2 in the constructors championship as Mercedes is on a charge and if the race in Mexico was a portrayal of Ferrari’s performance for the last two races, them they’re in grave danger from losing second place to.
It all comes down to the final two races where both the teams will complete for more prize money and bragging rights effectively. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc will be keen on analysing this season and incorporating their learnings into next year as they will possibly be up against Mercedes and Red Bull in a three way fight for the title. Till then, all focus will remain on Brazil and Abu Dhabi as we approach the end of the 2022 F1 season.
