Lewis Hamilton is the second-oldest driver on the F1 grid. At 38 years of age, the Briton trails only longtime rival Fernando Alonso in terms of career longevity and age on the Formula 1 grid as it stands, and remains on the grid for the 2024 season.
Hamilton’s career beyond his current contract remains unclear, however, his current deal takes him into his 40s, ending after the 2025 season. However, Natalie Pinkham suggested a prediction regarding Hamilton’s future in the sport, claiming he could race until he is 50 years old, albeit expressing concern over the status of Mercedes car development.
I think he’ll be driving until he’s 50. The trouble is, I think that Mercedes have been a bit on the back foot with changing the direction of their concept. And I think it takes a regulation change maybe for them to come back to the fore. But look, we say, ‘Well, they were miles off’, [but] he still finished third in the championship and Mercedes finished second, so not necessarily as far off...Natalie Pinkham said at the Autosport International Conference (H&T: Express).
Hamilton is still adamant about scoring his eighth championship and may yet accomplish his goal in the coming years. As rumors of the field converging arise, the Mercedes W15 challenger could potentially turn things in their favor in the upcoming season.
Lewis Hamilton reveals enjoyable ‘gritty’ rival’s identity
Lewis Hamilton has faced numerous intense rivals throughout his time in Formula 1, fighting for championships. The Briton has fought intensely with Max Verstappen in 2021, teammate Nico Rosberg in Mercedes and his McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso in 2007.
However, the Briton has revealed one of his fiercest rivals in his time in F1 to be Sebastian Vettel. Vettel competed for the title with Hamilton in 2017 and 2018 years after his four consecutive titles with Red Bull. Although Vettel could not prevail in 2017 and 2018, Hamilton claims the German was a ‘gritty’ rival he enjoyed competing with.
Sebastian Vettel. I’ve always enjoyed racing against him; every race has always been a gritty challenge.
Hamilton’s various rivalries have been career-defining both for himself and those involved in the battles. Rosberg retired after bagging the title, Alonso switched teams after a disastrous breakdown of relations with Hamilton and Verstappen went on to be a triple champion.
