“Never dim your light to make others feel more comfortable”: Lewis Hamilton shares advice on how to survive in F1

The recent news about Nelson Piquet‘s racist comments on seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton has shaken the Formula 1 world to its core. The insensitive words of the former Brazilian F1 World Champion that were spoken during an interview from last year, have been condemned by all the personnel associated with F1, but Red Bull is yet to issue a statement on the whole incident.
Piquet’s interview with Motorsports.com, in which he was discussing Lewis’ collision with Max Verstappen in last year’s British Grand Prix, suddenly resurfaced on the internet in the days leading up to this year’s race in Silverstone. While Formula 1 is still striving to become inclusive with their motto of #WeRaceAsOne, Nelson’s comments against the only Black racer in the history of F1 has scarred many of the motorsports enthusiasts for life.
In the middle of all this, the person who should have been affected the most is, of course, Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton. As a Black person, he has endured racism in this sport before as well. In a recent interview, he talked about how he survives in a white-dominated sport, and his reply was eye-opening.
Lewis Hamilton discusses diversity in motorsports, takes a slight dig at Nelson Piquet

While Lewis Hamilton’s name has been dragged unnecessarily into the entire fiasco about Nelson Piquet calling him a “little black man”, referring to his ethnicity in a derogatory manner, Hamilton has been very calm and reserved with his replies on this topic. In a recent interview with journalist Kayla Grey from The Shift, Lewis Hamilton joined young Canadian racer Nicole Havrda to discuss diversity in motorsports.
While the interview was underway, Lewis Hamilton was asked to share some advice on how he deals with being a role model for budding racers, and what he does to survive in F1, which is still a white-dominated sport as of now. Lewis said, “Always try to be yourself. Never dim your light to make others feel more comfortable around you. Shine as bright as you can.” This goes to show that Lewis Hamilton is absolutely unfazed by Nelson Piquet’s comments and he is not slowing down about promoting the entry of Black racers in Formula 1, even if it ruffles the feathers of some people like Piquet.
