‘No team order between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’: Gerhard Berger urges Ferrari not to prioritise any driver

It is never easy to be at the held of one of the top teams of Formula 1 and the Scuderia Ferrari have faced several problems regarding its team orders and strategies lately. In the last two races that took place in this year’s Championship season right before the summer break kicked off, it was seen that Charles Leclerc had to give up his guaranteed podium place wins because of troubles with his car and poor strategic decisions by his team.

And thus, many F1 fans have been urging the Scuderia to pool their resources on Leclerc to help him get as close to winning the World Championship as they can. But former F1 racer Gerhard Berger is against this idea as he believes the Maranello outfit should equally back both their racers as long as they display performances that are equally deserving. The Austrian said the team should not interfere when both racers are doing so well, and he also gave Frank Williams’ example to prove his point.

In Gerhard Berger’s words, Frank Williams was put in a tight spot when both his racers–Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet were doing exceptionally well and the team could not focus on any one racer as their No. 1 driver. Following their example, Ferrari should also give equal chances to both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to shine this year.

While some F1 pundits are of the opinion that any team vying for the Championship should be ruthless with their strategy and should focus on getting their No. 1 racer to the very top of the charts without dividing their resources equally amongst both drivers, Gerhard Berger disagrees with this strategy. According to the F1 veteran, both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have put up impressive performances and should be given full support from Ferrari’s end.

Speaking on this matter, Berger said, “We are a sport and I think in a sport as long as both drivers can win the championship we shouldn’t interfere, that’s my personal opinion. Frank Williams was maybe the pioneer. He didn’t care who won: Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, whatever. There could be orders at the last race of the season, but not before.

Now, with only nine races remaining in the roster, it is to be seen if Ferrari make some changes to their strategy, or if they continue with their old tactics. The Italian team has to make up almost a hundred points to bridge the gap between them and Red Bull to get close to winning the World Championship.
