“Nothing personal against Andretti,” Red Bull’s Christian Horner reveals why he does not have a problem with an 11th F1 team

Formula 1 is a closed-off sport that has a bunch of teams contesting for the top spot in the Championship every year. Now, to introduce a new team to the pack of 10 existing ones is an almost impossible task. There are questions of–a massive budget, all the required permits and licenses, and consent from the existing teams. And Michael and Mario Andretti‘s Andretti Motorsports has managed to surpass all the obstacles to finally be able to have their own team in F1 in the near future.

It has already been announced that Andretti Motoesports is coming into F1 as the 11th team in partnership with Cadillac. Now, many of the Team Principals of the existing squads have expressed their disinterest in having Andretti-Cadillac join them as their newest rival. But Red Bull’s main man Christian Horner has a different opinion. The Chief of the team that is reigning at the top right now, claimed that he has no problems with Andretti-Cadillac being in F1, and would even love to see them, if the financial side of things is settled.

In a recent statement, the FIA have already mentioned that they are considering adding two F1 teams to the current grid. This would mean 12 teams will now fight for the Championship, and there will be 24 racers under their employment. While this will surely increase the employing limits in F1, there are many downsides that have gotten the other Team Principals all worried about. The advent of two new teams would decrease the prize money that was earlier divided into parts of 10 as that would not have to go to 12 teams. And in Formula 1, money is of prime importance, as the fans already know.

While speaking about Andretti-Cadillac joining the Formula 1 grid, Christian Horner commented in the Formel Schmidt podcast, “If Liberty [Media] are happy to pay for it and bring in that money then I don’t think anyone would have a problem with it. If the teams’ budgets were not to go down, I don’t think there would be any problem at all. It’s nothing personal against Andretti or Cadillac, but it’s just business economics.”

In other news, Christian Horner’s team, Red Bull, have already revealed their 2023 challenger, which is named as the RB-19. Max Verstappen even did some rounds in the car at the Silverstone Circuit, and seemed quite optimistic about it while shooting a Twitter video addressing his fans. Now, it remains to be seen if Red Bull can help Max Verstappen score that much-awaited Championship hat-trick this year with the RB-19 or not.
