“Only time will tell if he’s got what it takes”: Pierre Gasly doubts Yuki Tsunoda’s ability to take the lead at AlphaTauri in 2023
At the end of the current Formula One 2022 season, Pierre Gasly will be bidding adieu to AlphaTauri after a long stint at Red Bull‘s sister team in hope of making it into the Milton-Keynes-based outfit in the future. As that has not happened till now, Gasly has finally decided to drop his musings about Red Bull and pursue a new challenge at Alpine, one of the most successful midfield teams in recent times.
With Pierre Gasly making the move to take Fernando Alonso’s place in the French team, it will be Yuki Tsunoda, the racer who debuted with AlphaTauri in 2021, who will have to lead the team from the next season onwards. But when talking about Yuki taking the helm at the Faenza-based team, Gasly is not too sure if the Japanese racer is up to the task yet.
Speaking at a recent interview, Pierre Gasly did express some doubts about the future of AlphaTauri with Yuki Tsunoda in the lead since he has very little experience. Tsunoda will be paired with a fresh recruit who has never driven as a regular racer in F1 before–Nyck de Vries. Even then, 27-year-old de Vries is a Champion at both F2 and Formula E, so he should bring some good results for the team next year.

Pierre Gasly believes it is still too early for Yuki Tsunoda to take the helm at AlphaTauri
Pierre and Yuki have always been thick as thieves at AlphaTauri, but even then, the Frenchman knows Yuki has very little experience. He said, “I think only time will tell whether he’s got what it takes to lead the team. His path to F1 was kind of fast forward. He went F4/F3/F2, and straight to F1 at quite a young age, with not so much experience. So I think only time will tell.”
Having driven in Formula 1 for only two seasons, the 22-year-old from Japan is not ready to lead AlphaTauri to a better place in the Championship next year, according to Pierre Gasly. But it only remains to be seen if Gasly’s premonition turns true, or if Yuki manages to surprise everyone and score some great performances in the upcoming season.
