“Our strategy does not focus on nationality”: Laurent Rossi denies that Pierre Gasly might go to Alpine because he is French

As the current Formula 1 season is now coming to an end with only six races remaining to take place, the drivers’ market is roiling with news reports and controversies. And the Alpine F1 Racing team has been involved in the depths of this drivers’ market drama right from the beginning. It all started when Sebastian Vettel announced that he is going to retire from Aston Martin at the end of the F1 2022 season, leaving the seat beside Lance Stroll empty.

In the weeks following Vettel’s announcement, Fernando Alonso rocked the Formula 1 world with a sudden shift to Aston Martin from Alpine, thus leaving the French team that he had joined in 2021 after a two-year sabbatical. And fans were almost certain that Alpine would now take up F2 Champion Oscar Piastri in place of the Spaniard, but Piastri had other things in mind as he moved to McLaren. This has now left Alpine with an empty seat with a number of potential candidates eyeing the opportunity to drive for them.

As fans have been speculating who might be joining Alpine for the upcoming F1 season, their CEO Laurent Rossi had said the list of deserving racers has been shortened to six possible names. And now, Rossi has also addressed rumors that Pierre Gasly, who might be leaving AlphaTauri this year, would have the upper hand in getting hired by Alpine as he is a French racer.

The F1 drivers’ market is always brewing rumors, and the newest one about Alpine says that the team might be looking for another French driver who would pair up with Esteban Ocon, who is a resident of Normandy. But Laurent Rossi denied such facts vehemently as he said a racer’s ethnicity is “not at all” important in deciding whether he would get a opportunity at Alpine. This means Pierre Gasly does not have any advantage in getting Alonso’s seat at Alpine.

Rossi went on to say, “With Alonso, we have a Spaniard in the team. We sell relatively few cars in Spain. We have Fernando because he is one of the best drivers in the world. Our marketing strategy does not focus on the nationality of our drivers.”

Thus, Laurent Rossi has clearly stated that it is the drivers’ potential to take Alpine to the top that they are considering for making the decision regarding a teammate for Esteban Ocon. And in the coming weeks, it is expected that Alpine will be making an announcement concerning their recruitment.
