Ousted F1 Boss gives his take on Lewis Hamilton continuing racing even at 39 as ‘he is still motivated’
Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner was recently relieved from his duties at the American squad after an alleged disagreement with their owner Gene Haas.
Guenther Steiner and Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has extended his contract with Mercedes until the end of 2025, at which point the Briton will be into his 40s. Many have questioned Hamilton’s ability to continue competing at the top level until then, especially with his first two winless seasons coming consecutively in 2022 and 2023.
Guenther Steiner, who stepped down from the post of team principal from Haas in early January, delivered his opinion on Hamilton’s future in the sport. Steiner believes that Hamilton will not stop racing any time soon, especially considering his peak physical ability despite being in the latter stage of his F1 career.
I don't think Lewis will stop racing anytime soon. Looking at him physically you wouldn't think so never that he is 38 years old, or 39 as he will be at the beginning of 2024. He is very fit and I don't think he is ready to stop racing.Guenther Steiner said, via Formulapassion.it.
Hamilton has been joined in his continued journey with Mercedes by longtime team principal Toto Wolff. Wolff, who joined Mercedes in 2013 alongside the septuple champion, recently extended his contract by three years to go along with his role as CEO of the outfit.
Bernie Ecclestone criticizes Lewis Hamilton and George Russell duo for substandard performance
Mercedes have suffered a lot in the ground effect era, unable to compete for the championship in 2022 or 2023. The Brackley-based outfit managed only a single win in 2022 and remained completely winless in their disappointing 2023 campaign.
Bernie Ecclestone was extremely critical of Mercedes’ performance in the past two years. The British former head of the FIA claims that Hamilton “failed” in his bid for an eighth championship and his teammate George Russell had a disappointing showing as well. Ecclestone commended Red Bull for their performance.
Hamilton failed a bit. Russell wasn’t as good as he thought he was either. Still, they [Mercedes] shouldn’t have lost so dramatically. They have patiently endured Mercedes dominance, replacing each weak link one by one, developing the best team, the best design, the best car and the best driverBernie Ecclestone said, as reported by PlanetF1.
Mercedes is ramping up for a good performance in the upcoming 2024 season. With an upgraded W15 with components completely different from its predecessor W14, Mercedes could potentially bring the fight to Red Bull after two years of losses.
