Fernando Alonso has been on a different level this season with Aston Martin. His move to the team was greatly criticised last year. However, the Spaniard has stunned the paddock having gotten multiple podium finishes this year. In the last few races, Aston Martin seem to be on the back foot with other teams having a pace advantage over them. Fernando has a theory about that.

For the 2023 British GP, Pirelli had announced a new specification of tyres which are capable of withstanding higher than expected loads that the cars produced. Fernando Alonso provided his own theory on them coming to a conclusion that they were impacting the car’s performance. However, Red Bull Chief engineer Paul Monaghan has gone on to question that claim.

In an interview, Paul addresses Fernando’s theory. “That’s hard to tell because we were given the opportunity in Spain to do a back-to-back [with the new tyres] and learned a little bit of what was coming and prepared ourselves for Silverstone,” Monaghan told media including RacingNews365. “The challenge is to try and sort your car out through this year and give yourself a better platform into next year. Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Alpine, Alfa Romeo are all allowed to develop,” he stated.

Fernando Alonso’s claims could well and truly just be a coincidence

After the new tyres were introduced, it has been observed by the Spaniard that the team’s pace had taken a hit. While the compound of the tyres was the same, their construction was a bit different. Ever since the new tyres were introduced, Fernando Alonso finished seventh and ninth in Britan and Hungary respectively. Fernando claimed that this drop in performance was due to the recent change in tyres composition.

Fernando also claimed that the new tyres hurt Red Bull as Max Verstappen was not able to get pole position at the Hungarian GP. However, the Spaniard was proven wrong when the Dutchman went on to dominate and win the race yet again by a huge margin. The Spaniard will have to be careful about the McLaren’s of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri who seem to have gotten a huge pace boost with their recent upgrades.
