Ted Kravitz, one of the most respected faces in F1, has made it known that Red Bull would back Max Verstappen over Sergio Perez if it came down to choosing between the two prolific drivers during the 2023 F1 season. Max Verstappen is the reigning World Champion and has already bagged the title twice in consecutive years. Despite this, Kravitz feels the Dutchman would get the team’s backing over his Mexican teammate.
As things stand in the ongoing campaign, both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have won a race, and the latter is just one point shy of the other in the Drivers Championship. The RB19 has proved just too hot to handle for the other nine F1 teams this year, and the Red Bull duo has been reaping the benefits. In the first two races of 2023, Red Bull has secured a dominant 1-2 finish in both.
However, things would get very spicy, if the two are close to each other in the Drivers standings, by the time the current campaign reaches the business end of the season. At that time, true colors would come out, and it would be known who the team was really backing. While that is a bit far down the line, Kravitz has already determined that Verstappen would get Red Bull’s support.
While a lot has already been made about the Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez saga in the media, Ted Kravitz, while talking about the duo said, “He can make it competitive, but Red Bull is ultimately behind Max Verstappen. His dad, Jos Verstappen, was disappointed that Red Bull wasn’t allowing the drivers to race at the end, but Max is Red Bull’s focus for the drivers’ championship, no question about it.”
Moreover, a slight incident of Max Verstappen getting favored was seen in Saudi Arabia. Sergio Perez was not informed of the 25-year-old going for the fastest lap point on the final lap of the race. Hearing Perez’s radio when he asked about the fastest lap, it was evident that he was skeptical about it. The Dutchman has been at Red Bull for several years, whereas Perez is still relatively new on the team.
Ted Kravitz’s take on Red Bull favoring Max Verstappen over Sergio Perez
The Sky Sports pundit has clarified that Max Verstappen holds all the cards on the Milton-Keynes-based team. This is a big claim, but considering how much pull the Dutchman has got on the Austrian team, it would not come as a huge surprise if Christian Horner and Co. are seen backing him over Sergio Perez in the World Championship fight this year.
The way the 2023 season has panned out so far, it is a common belief that Red Bull would breeze past its competition this year. If this proves to be the case, the only thing that would make the Championship fight interesting is the Red Bull duo fighting each other. Sergio Perez has never won the F1 World Championship, would he be able to dethrone Verstappen off his pedestal this year?
