“Reliability issues cost a lot of points,” Zhou Guanyu knows what to blame for his unimpressive results from F1 2023
When Zhou Guanyu had just stepped into Formula 1 last year, he was immediately paired with one of the most experienced racers on the track–former Mercedes man Valtteri Bottas. In his very first Grand Prix as a regular F1 driver, Zhou made it into an elite list of racers as he scored points by snatching the tenth position at the season-opening round in Bahrain. While fans were quite impressed with the young racer because of his point-scoring in his F1 debut, Zhou could only manage to get five more points throughout the season.
The 23-year-old from China has now pinpointed the reason behind his failure to get more promising results for his team. He also talked about the hopes he has gotten for his second Championship campaign with Alfa Romeo at the team’s car launch. The Alfa Romeo C43 is a stunning car that Zhou feels quite confident about as he said he is more prepared than ever before to go headfirst into the upcoming Formula 1 2023 season.
Zhou Guanyu also talked about the long winter break that he enjoyed after the end of the F1 season last year. The racer hails from the far East, so it is not always possible for him to go to his house in China because all his training takes place in the European facilities, mostly. Zhou Guanyu talked about how he has not been home in two years, and then he finally could go back after the F1 season, so he was quite happy to get that family time as well.

Zhou Guanyu says “let’s see” when talking about his hopes from the Alfa Romeo C43
The Alfa Romeo F1 Racing Team unveiled their 2023 car to massive reactions from the fans who loved the look of it. But it is, ultimately, the performance that matters the more, and in that aspect, Zhou Guanyu said, “Last year I think I earned more points than what I had, because I feel like many reliability issues cost a lot of points. This season, let’s see. Hopefully we have a very strong car, then we can have a lot more points than what we had last season.”
Zhou’s contract was extended after his performance last year because he had shown his potential despite not scoring many points for his team. The 2023 F1 season will be a challenge for him as he will have to fight to keep his seat in the king class of racing. Now, it only remains to be seen if he can improve upon his performance from last year and measure up to Valtteri Bottas, his experienced teammate at the Swiss team.
