Reports: Williams counting on F2 driver gaining super license points in order to replace ‘GOATIFI’

Reports: Williams counting on F2 driver gaining super license points in order to replace ‘GOATIFI’

Logan Sargeant

There is currently one open seat in the Formula 1 grid, at Alpine. Pierre Gasly is expected to be the frontrunner for that, and Nyck de Vries is being considered to be his replacement at AlphaTauri, as the Colton Herta move has fallen through. De Vries was earlier being considered as a replacement for Nicholas Latifi, but there is another.

Logan Sargeant is part of the Williams’ driver academy and is impressing in his rookie season in Formula 2. The American driver sits in third place, with one more round to go in the championship. Nicholas Latifi is on rather thin ice at Williams, as Nyck de Vries, in just one race, jumped him in the points total.

Last season, too, Latifi was completely outclassed by his teammate George Russell. In such a situation, a replacement may be warranted, and according to Autosport, Williams are counting on Logan Sargeant acquiring the required super license points so they can give him the seat.

Williams’ Jost Capito believes Logan Sargeant is ready for F1

As the situation stands, de Vries seems to be the frontrunner for the AlphaTauri seat, and if the deal goes through, Williams will completely shift their focus to Logan Sargeant. But there is a catch: Sargeant will have to finish the season fifth or higher to get the required super license points, or he may end up like Colton Herta’s situation.

Williams’ team principal, Jost Capito has no qualms with getting a rookie for the seat, and believes that Sargeant is ready for F1: “I think he’s ready. Yeah, he needs some [superlicence] points. Of course, if he doesn’t get the points, nothing helps. But yeah, I’m confident that he’s ready if he gets the points or not.”

Daniel Ricciardo is also out of a seat at the end of the season, so even that is a distant possibility. Mick Schumacher’s Haas contract hasn’t been renewed yet, and he is also a choice, as is Antonio Giovinazzi. Alpine’s plan for Oscar Piastri was to loan him to Williams, and they may do this with Jack Doohan instead.

If Sargeant gets the seat, he will be the first American to race in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi in 2014-15. It will also certainly be a boost for the American audiences, and the market that Formula 1 has finally cracked after years.
