George Russell has not had the best season this year, trailing behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton by 58 points after outscoring him in 2022. This struggle continued in the US Grand Prix, as he qualified only 5th for the Grand Prix, two places behind Hamilton. Russel acknowledged that his Grand Prix had a poor start, dropping three positions to 8th in the first lap alone.
Russell experienced further troubles after he pitted for hard tires, as he had to handle fuel and the engine, which slowed him down. This cost Russell a second a lap to the cars ahead and lost position to Sergio Perez in the faster Red Bull. He left COTA frustrated, believing a podium finish was on the car at COTA.
Then we put the medium back on and we were the quickest car on track. We closed back in on Max by about 10 seconds and on Lewis by a couple of seconds. Sort of standing here thinking it was definitely another missed opportunity and frustrated we were not on the podium
Russell as reported by pitdebrief.com
Russell managed to make the most out of his race once he changed for medium tires, gaining 7 seconds on Max Verstappen. He also got 2 seconds close to his teammate Hamilton. He was too far back to overtake Charles Leclerc, who was extremely slow due to mismanaged tire strategy. Russell was promoted to P5 after disqualifications for Leclerc and Hamilton.
Russell recalled his previous races in the Circuit of the Americas, admitting that the bumpy track is somewhat difficult for him. He isn’t too bothered, considering Austin an “outlier” due to its unique bump-ridden asphalt. He believes he can close the gap between Hamilton and Verstappen, exhibiting the potential of the W14 that he could not exploit.
