Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez triumphed at the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix with a dominating performance scoring a 1-2 finish. Ahead of the race weekend, it was revealed that Max was due to take a new gearbox resulting in a 5 place grid penalty for the main race on Sunday. This wasn’t much of a bother for the Red Bull hotshot as he has won from position further back on the F1 grid.

With Spa being a sprint race weekend, there was even more points out for grabs. However, tragedy struck at the sprint wherein Sergio Perez had a collision with Lewis Hamilton which left the Mexican with a whole in his RB-19. This meant an immediate DNF for him. During the main race itself, Sergio got of to a great start and was leading the race until Max Verstappen passed him and went on to dominate the race.

Sergio Perez talked to Sky Sports F1 and provided the main reason behind his lack of pace. “We were too aggressive with the car setup, not having any practice. So it was important just to make sure we brought the car home. Especially on that second stint, he pulled a massive gap and then I went off into Turn 11 and then the gap got bigger,” The Red Bull driver stated.

As of the 2023 Belgian GP, Sergio Perez has fallen behind teammate Max Verstappen in the driver’s championship. While Max sits comfortably in lead, Fernando Alonso is in P3. In the past few weeks, the Mexican driver also had to up his qualifying performance after being knocked out of Q1 multiple times.

The summer break will give Sergio Perez a chance to rest, regroup and rethink his strategy for the remainder of the season. There’s a significant gap between the Red Bull duo which the Mexican will be keen on decreasing. It will be interesting to see what happens at the Dutch GP. Until then, the whole F1 grid will have time to rest after a strenuous first half of the season.
