“Sergio Perez ruined the greatest Monaco lap of all time,” F1 Twitter in agony as Sainz-Perez crash brings out red flag in qualifying; Charles Leclerc takes pole
After a tumultuous Qualifying Session at the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, all the F1 fans were delighted to see Scuderia Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc get the pole position in his home Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc’s “Monaco Curse” is a commonly discussed topic in the motorsport communities. And in the days leading up to this year’s Monaco GP, Leclerc set out to debunk this myth. With a pole position in the Quali session, Charles Leclerc is already halfway through to his goal.
But the Monaco Grand Prix was not all about Charles Leclerc and his brilliant racing. Red Bull recruit Sergio Perez, who is often overlooked because of his teammate–the reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, put up a groundbreaking performance today. The Mexican went on to aim for the pole throughout his lap run during Q3, but in the end, he crashed against a sidewall in the street circuit of Monaco, and that ended the Qualifying in a red flag.
Now, fans are saying Sergio Perez ended one of the greatest laps in the history of Formula 1, as his crash caused a red flag, which prevented Charles Leclerc from finishing his flying lap.

Towards the end of the Qualifying Session at the Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc was about to go for pole with his flying lap. As the Scuderia Ferrari racer started his lap, his timings were spectacular, and they could have broken the record set by Lewis Hamilton in the same circuit in 2019.
But as Sergio Perez crashed into the wall, completely shattering the rear end of his RB-18, Charles Leclerc had to go to the pits and abandon his flying lap as the red flag was called in. This ended the Qualifiers in Monaco, and Charles Leclerc was announced as the pole sitter for tomorrow’s race.
The other Ferrari racer, Carlos Sainz, who also suffered a fraction of an impact from Sergio Perez’s crash, will start Sunday’s race beside Charles Leclerc as he got a P2 finish.
