“Shame for the racing here,” Toto Wolff furious on Fernando Alonso for holding everyone back in Monaco
Toto Wolff and Fernando Alonso
Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ CEO and Team Principal wasn’t happy with the race in Monaco, Hamilton underwent a stressful race behind the wheels of Fernando Alonso’s Alpine. Lewis started 8th and finished 8th as well, but could have fought the likes of Lando and Russell on the top, but was denied due to the “Formula 2” speed of the Alpine.
Lewis at the start of the race got in contact with Ocon, and later was stuck behind Alonso, with the latter almost driving 5 seconds slower every lap from the top four. To which Toto expressed his feeling, “If a car [Alonso] can slow down by almost five seconds and hold everybody up it is just a shame for the racing here”.Fernando on the other hand was happy with what he did, he rather enjoyed keeping behind the whole race.
Wolff renamed the Alpine as a formula 2 car and also criticized the changes in Monaco circuits want, You can see there is another lesson that track position is everything in Monaco, I mean five seconds is like a Formula 2 car.” in an interview with Sky Sport.
Toto Wolff and Mercedes still have scope for an improvement after Monaco
Spanish Grand Prix marked a return to the Silver arrow but Monaco still was a disappointment for the team. George Russell on the other hand has been finishing in the top 5 for the seventh time this season. Mercedes would still struggle in Baku and might also need to work in Montreal.
With the Silver arrows having struggles in slow-speed corners they have all the pace on the straights. The end of the season might see a comeback from the team back to the top, but still have a significant amount of work still to do. They are comfortably sitting third on the Championship table with 134 points.
