After years and years of Mercedes dominance in the turbo-hybrid era, finally the 2021 season rose upon us. Red Bull had finally found their mojo and were ready to gun for the title with Max Verstappen at the helm. After both the drivers took part in an intense round of battles all around the globe, they finally reached Abu Dhabi level on points.

This was that track where everything changed for the Mercedes driver. Having led the race for most of the time, a late safety car brought the whole pack together. Max was breathing down Lewis’s neck and managed to pass him on the last tap where the safety car came in. It was the most intense lap in the history of the sport with one trying to become the most successful driver of all time whilst the other wanted to win theirs first title.

After Verstappen’s glorious title triumph, the media went into a frenzy where fans of no. 44 started protesting against the final outcome of the race. There was a human error made by Michael Masi who was the race director back then. Masi did not let all the back markers through which let to protect speculating that the 2021 title was manipulated. Here is what Mr Lowe told PlanetF1.com in an interview. “Nothing’s fair in Formula 1. I’ve been on the wrong side of fairness many, many times and then the right side of good luck as well. That’s the nature, that’s the interest, that’s the excitement of the sport, actually. It’s not a sport where everything should go to plan and always the best person by some analysis should win. That’s why we watch and love the sport and there’s never a right answer anyway to anything.”

“I did feel sorry for the race director [Masi] actually, I think he got the wrong end of that really unfairly to me. There was no right or wrong answer there. He did his job, he was the ref,” he continued.

Paddy Lowe acknowledged that the incidents that took place in 2021 were controversial but felt like the individuals who got hate spewed on them did not deserve it. F1 is a sport filled with surprises and they can come anytime. Therefore it is necessary to be prepared for anything and everything. The 2023 season seems to have a lot in hand for the fans of the sport.
