“Theirs is the most flexible,” Max Verstappen amused with Mercedes supporting flexi-floor alterations
Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff
Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are two of the few drivers to not have experienced any support of porpoising throughout the course of the season. But, unlike Red Bull, a lot of teams, like Mercedes, have had to face the full brunt of porpoising. After Lewis Hamilton’s back injury at the Azerbaijan GP, Mercedes approached the FIA and asked the governing body to help them out.
After analysing the situation, FIA decided to intervene and issued a technical directive, allowing teams to use a permanent secondary floor. Now, the FIA has decided to get rid of that measure and introduced a raft of new measure in an update technical directive. This has been down to limit the effects of porpoising before it becomes a safety hazard for the drivers.
Interestingly, the governing body is also determined to limit the flexing of the underfloor. It was done after a suspicion of misuse of that rule. FIA thinks that there are some teams which seemed to have found a grey area to help them give a performance boost. This extra flexing allows the cars to improve downforce without withering down the plank or going through the ill effects of porpoising while the floor hits the ground.
Max Verstappen believes Mercedes to be the worst offenders when it comes to flexing floors
These changes will coming into effect from the French GP. One team that supports this decision is Mercedes which is baffling to Max Verstappen. Toto Wolff recently said, “What’s in the regulation and what the intent of the regulations is pretty clear. I mean, there’s is no argument why that could deflect more than what’s in the regs. So a bit of a surprise to say the least: more a shocker.”
“So it won’t affect us in how we run our car. It may well be it affects our competitors, and by virtue of that we move a little bit closer.”
Max Verstappen has replied saying, “Well, what I don’t quite understand, is that they’re complaining about the flexible floors while theirs is the most flexible.”
Max Verstappen believes Mercedes will be most affected team if and when these changes come into play as they have a floor that flexes more, in comparison to any other team.
