‘They are rightly left behind’: Matt Bishop gives FIA a pat on the back for their actions against Bernie Ecclestone and Nelson Piquet’s archaic mindsets
Nelson Piquet
F1 is no stranger to Bernie Ecclestone and Nelson Piquet; both of them have had significant roles in the history of F1, while Nelson was a racer himself in the early days, Ecclestone was once the CEO of the sport. No matter how great these people are, both have been cut-off from F1, and though many might think of it as not such a good move, it indeed, is, after what happened recently. The sport is known for welcoming all people without any racism, sexism, or homophobia, but there have been recent incidents where these people have proved it to be otherwise (in their own selves).

The news came in just before this year’s British Grand Prix, that while Nelson Piquet was analyzing the crash between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021 at Silverstone, Piquet got mad at Hamilton and referred to him using the most racial slurs. This happened during a Portuguese interview and was not known until this year. The internet raged out. At the same time, as it turned out, he also called Hamilton using homophobic slurs earlier. Hamilton said that what mattered more was not that Piquet used the N-word slurs, rather it was the fact that Nelson referred to Verstappen by his name, and Hamilton by his skin color.

Bernie Ecclestone praised Putin
Thinking about Piquet isn’t all, Bernie Ecclestone, just a few days back, said that Vladimir Putin is a wonderful person, and is kind of one for whom he would take a bullet. When Bernie Ecclestone was asked about the fact that Putin invaded Ukraine and took so many innocent lives, his only defense was that “it wasn’t intended.”
It is really a shame that people like Nelson Piquet and Bernie Ecclestone are related to the sport, and still, in 2022, are calling out people for their skin color and/or sexual preferences. Just like Matt Bishop (an English journalist) wrote for The Race; “Were we done yet? Could we write off 69-year-old Piquet’s aberration as just one contemptible blot on Formula One’s otherwise rather impressive June?
Sadly, no, we could not.”
However, it is somewhat good news to say that Nelson Piquet has been banned from ever attending a Grand Prix, and Bernie Ecclestone has got nothing to do with F1 at the old and rough age of 91.
