“They’re not free to make decisions,” Former McLaren mechanic blasts Ferrari crew for another week full of disastrous strategy calls

Ferrari held all the cards going into the weekend in Hungary but just like the past few weeks, it went downhill for the Italian Giants as they suffered a telling blow to their title chances. Red Bull had a terrible start to the weekend with Sergio Perez failing to get into Q3 and Max Verstappen having forced to start the race from P10 after facing engine problems as he got ready for his last flying lap in the final qualifying session.

Although George Russell unexpectedly snatched pole from Carlos Sainz, theball was still in Ferrari’s court keeping in mind the kind of pace they had shown throughout the weekend. But, Ferrari of this year have shown that they are vulnerable when it comes to strategy and that did cost Charles Leclerc the race. It was more disappointing as Ferrari enjoyed a pretty strong first half of the race.

It all went went wrong after Carlos Sainz’s slow pit stop which didn’t allow him to overcut George Russell as he came out of the pits behind Esteban Ocon. As far as Charles Leclerc was concerned, it was pretty clear that hard tyres wasn’t the way to go which meant it was important to prolong his stint with second set of mediums. But, just to cover off Max Verstappen, Ferrari took a hasty call.

Ferrari don’t have the courage to make the judgement call in crunch situations

It meant that Carlos finished P4 and Charles finished P6 which has meant that criticism has been flying from all directions. Former McLaren mechanic, Marc Priestley said, “I’m going to be honest, I don’t think the break is going to do them any good over the course of this particular season. “If you look at what happened [in the Hungary race], it was one of the fastest cars at the Grand Prix weekend, all weekend they’ve been pretty quick, you have got to say faster than the Red Bulls on most cases.”

“So for me, the summer break, that’s not what Ferrari need here. They need a total reset, heads are going to have to roll here and there’s no mistaking about that.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who’ve worked there in the past, they all say the same thing. People can’t make decisions, they’re not free to make decisions, they don’t have the confidence to make decisions when it matters.

It could well possible mean that this could be the end of both the championships with Charles Leclerc 80 points behind Max Verstappen and Ferrari 97 points behind Red Bull. If Ferrari wants to fight back, the response has to be pretty quick and solid.
