“This is a murder attempt”: F1 fans criticise Max Verstappen’s overtaking methods as his contact with Lewis Hamilton lands him a penalty in Brazil
The Sao Paulo Grand Prix has already gone above and beyond all the motorsports fans’ expectations and it has not even been half over yet! After the surprising Qualifying and the torrential Sprint Race, fans already knew they were in for a great racing session. Just as the lights went off to mark the start of the Main Race in Brazil, everyone turned their focus on the cars in the front, but the shock came from the middle of the grid as Daniel Ricciardo collided with Kevin Magnussen during lap 1 and the safety car was called in.
Just as racing resumed after the safety car, and fans somewhat recovered from the first contact, there was a massive collision that made them all get a flashback of the Verstappen-Hamilton battle from last year. Max Verstappen was trying to overtake Lewis Hamilton’s Silver Arrow, and while doing so, the Dutchman failed to measure the gap that the Briton had left for him, and the two made a contact. Max suffered considerable damage to his RB-18, and had to drop to the back of the grid while Hamilton lost a few places as well.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton’s racing clashes date back to the 2021 F1 Championship when they were aiming for the same title. As Mercedes’ performance took a sharp drop in this current season, Lewis could not match up to Max Verstappen‘s abilities and thus, he did not take part in the Championship battle this year. But in Brazil, the Silver Arrows have been looking quite strong, and that is how fans came to encounter another wheel-to-wheel between Lewis and Max.
Fans believe Max Verstappen has not even learnt how to overtake yet
Lewis Hamilton had been hoping for his first race win this season in the Sao Paolo Grand Prix as the Mercedes’ performance has been quite impeccable through this weekend. But Max Verstappen’s collision with the seven-time World Champion made sure that even if Russell manages to bring Mercedes their first race win of 2022, it will not be Lewis Hamilton. And fans were enraged at Max Verstappen for snatching away Lewis’ winning chance.

In the end, it was announced that Max Verstappen will get a 5 second time penalty because of his attempts at “causing a collision” with Lewis Hamilton. But Max did not retire from the race even after sustaining a lot of damage to his car and dropping to the back of the grid. He wants to get back to the top and ensure his team gets enough points at the end of the Sao Paulo GP. Now, it only remains to be seen how the race pans out for Max Verstappen, ultimately.
