“This is not what we deserved,” Toto Wolff apologises to Lewis Hamilton after an awful Imola GP result

After the Emilia Romagna GP, Mercedes team principal and CEO, Toto Wolff would have a mixed bag of feelings. Rookie driver George Russell claimed his 4th consecutive points finish by finishing P4 after an emphatic drive starting P11 on the grid. This showed that, if the conditions are right, the Silver Arrows can perform their best. But the story wasn’t the same in the other side of the garage.

Lewis Hamilton had a weekend to forger when compared to his teammate George. The Brit was held up by traffic and bad pit strategy could only mean he finished P13. This made the 7-time world champion to believe that he is out of the Championship title race.

After Hamilton’s race, Wolff apologised on the team radio saying, “Sorry for what you had to drive with today, this result is not what we deserved.” To which the 7-time World Champion responded with, “I know. Let’s keep working hard.”

Toto Wolff: “We are going to look at things for Miami”

Lewis Hamilton had an uneventful weekend. He was knocked out of Q2 along with his teammate, finished the sprint race in P14 and could not improve his situation in the main race. The 7-time world champion spent most of the race behind the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly and faced an unsafe release by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon for which the Frenchman received a penalty. Meanwhile his 2021 title rival, Max Verstappen lapped his W13 and claimed victory in the race.

In his post-race interview, Wolff said, “George really drove well considering the car he had underneath him, we missed adjusting his flap so he had a car that was set up for wet not dry, so a really good drive. I said sorry [to Hamilton] for the car he has to drive at the moment. We are going to look at things for Miami, I think we can make a step, bring developments to the car which will fix the bouncing.”

Mercedes slipped to 3rd in the Constructors Championship after Red Bull overtook them with a one-two finish in Imola. Hamilton is 7th in the Drivers championship, 3 positions behind teammate Russell.
