“This season has still been the best season of my career”: George Russell disagrees with Lewis Hamilton’s comment on 2022 being a “year to forget”

George Russell
Only a few days ago, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton took to his Instagram and shared some comments on his 2022 season, saying that he would rather forget this year because of his string of underperformances. The recently-concluded campaign had been his only winless season till date. But his teammate George Russell, who debuted with Mercedes in 2022, has very different opinions on how his year went as the young racer claimed that it has been the “best season” of his career.
George Russell earned Mercedes their only Grand Prix victory of this year as he displayed a brilliant performance behind the wheels at the Brazil Grand Prix. The former Williams racer has explained that he only wishes to focus on the positive moments of this season, rather than highlighting all the faults of the eight-time World Championship-winning team which came to the front as they got the third position in the points table this season.

Right from the beginning of the season, Mercedes failed to measure up to the other top-three teams of F1–Ferrari and Red Bull–in terms of speed and reliability. Lewis Hamilton could only score two top 5 positions in the first five Grands Prix of 2022. On the other hand, George Russell, his young team partner, beat the F1 veteran by outperforming him in almost every race this year, thus the season has been quite fulfilling for him.

George Russell believes there are many positive points to take out from Mercedes’ 2022 Championship campaign

In his first year with Mercedes, George Russell was expected to score some good points for the team, but none of the fans could believe when the young Briton surpassed Lewis Hamilton and went on to bring Mercedes their only Grand Prix win of this season. Reflecting on how his 2022 campaign turned out, Russell said, “This season has still been the best season of my career. [We’ve had a lot of] podiums and I think we’ve had a lot of very good races.”
George Russell also said, “I’m not going to call this a difficult situation, but from a performance side we’re not where we want to be. But you can’t just sit there, sulk and be upset with everything.”
In the end, it is a given fact that Mercedes have a lot to go over so that they can get back to their winning form and give steep competition to Ferrari and Red Bull in 2023. With the upcoming season’s first race in Bahrain only a few months away, time is running out for the Stuttgart-based outfit and it is to be seen which changes they introduce in their team tactics for next year.
