Toni Cowan-Brown and Lando Norris

Formula 1 is often viewed as a male-dominated sport. F1 has failed to have a female F1 driver in recent years, with the last woman to race in the sport being Lella Lombardi in 1976. However, over the years the sport has risen in popularity with a much larger female fan following. Yet, the domain stays largely dominated by men. This was witnessed recently when McLaren’s Lando Norris got together with an all-men group of content creators.

Lando Norris’s visit was publicly criticized by TikTok streamer and F1 enthusiast, Toni Cowan-Brown. Toni posted a story on Instagram, expressing her regret for the people in the picture. Cowan-Brown wrote, “I worry sometimes for the men who seem to have no women in their lives other than family members or significant others.” Certainly a dig at the men in the picture, including some big names such as PitStop Boys, ex-WTF1 team, and Quadrant.

Toni Cowan-Brown took a jibe at Lando Norris for having such a gathering without a single woman in sight. Toni wrote, “How do you bring together so many people? and not a single one is a woman.” Toni was furious about the lack of inclusivity in this meeting. She further stated, “The message this sends is brutal and so archaic.” Thus, Cowan-Brown believes that this ‘all-boys’ gathering will only discourage women in motorsport, shaping it as more of an only men’s field.

Toni-Cowan Brown stands firm in her opinion

Lando Norris’s gathering with some of the biggest F1 content creators

Toni received immense backlash after her comments on Lando Norris and the content creators. However, the TikTok star seems to stay put on her views and looks for women to change the landscape in the world of Formula 1. Cowan-Brown wrote, “People seem far more pissed than I thought and that’s a great sign.” It seems that Toni is not going to back down on what she feels is correct. She mentioned that women in motorsport will be arriving in “full force.”

Additionally, Toni-Cowan Brown mentioned that many in the industry are “absolutely not ready or equipped to handle what’s about to happen.” Certainly, Lando Norris’s visit created quite a ruckus. Motorsport has been changing in recent years. Drivers such as Jamie Chadwick have become prominent faces in the racing scene. Formula 1 is also starting a new F1 academy junior category for women. This indeed will provide female drivers with the opportunity to make it big in F1.

Undoubtedly, Formula 1 has suffered from the lack of female drivers on the grid. But things are changing. Female team members are present in every team and they are just as talented as their male counterparts. Similarly, there are thousands of women who are performing brilliantly and defying all odds to make a mark in motorsport. Be it through a racing seat or an engineering commitment. Thus Toni’s take on Lando Norris’s photograph is not the best situation to take a jibe.
