The Toto Wolff-led Mercedes F1 team is way past its glory days at the pinnacle of motor racing. The turbo-hybrid era was the time when they were at the peak of their powers. It is no surprise that they secured a whopping eight constructors and seven drivers championship between 2014-2021.

Toto Wolff has been leading the team since 2013 but ever since the dawn of the new regulations, the outfit has just not been able to match the might of heavy hitters like Red Bull. The Austrian outfit has won pretty much everything under the current regulations and after two disappointing campaigns, and a tough start to 2024 for Mercedes, the question arises whether Wolff is the right man to lead the team’s F1 project!

At the end of 2022, the German outfit ended its campaign in third place behind Ferrari and Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton and Co. were only able to amass 515 points in comparison to Red Bull’s 759. Moreover, Mercedes only managed a single Grand Prix win courtesy of George Russell.

The same pattern ensued last year as the W14 was nowhere near the might of the RB19. While the team managed a second-place finish in the standings, there was a huge gap between them and Red Bull. Max Verstappen and Co. managed an impressive 860 points in comparison to Mercedes’s 460.

Keeping all these things in view, it is highly debatable whether Wolff should carry on in his role at Mercedes. On one hand, he has played a huge role in the success the team has amassed since 2013, but on the other, things have gone downhill in the modern era!

While dwelling on such a topic, one also has to keep in mind that Wolff holds a 33 percent stake in the Mercedes team. The decision to leave or stay majorly lies with the 52-year-old himself.

Toto Wolff has claimed he ‘can’t imagine doing something else’ than leading Mercedes

As mentioned earlier, Toto Wolff is the past and the present of the Mercedes F1 team. Everything that goes on at the outfit happens under his leadership with him having his trusted allies alongside him.

The 52-year-old wants to keep leading the Mercedes F1 project for years to come!

A stone could fall on my head and how does it look afterwards? That is why I would like to see myself in a few years maybe not going to 24 races, and just to 15. But that is many years away. I see myself in this role for a long time. I cannot imagine doing something else.
Toto Wolff said in a post interview with PA

The Brackley-based Mercedes F1 team is one of the most successful outfits on the current grid. It has amassed huge success in the sport and is easily among the top three teams. However, since 2022 things have not really gone as planned, and considering this, the ongoing campaign could lead to some personnel changes.

Toto Wolff is determined to bring the Mercedes name back on top in F1. Lewis Hamilton will leave the team at the end of this year and thus, from 2025 onward, Wolff could look to promote young talents and secure the driver line-up of the team for a long time!
