Toto Wolff and Mercedes have been doing everything to get back at Red Bull ever since 2021. After a bone crushing defeat in the driver’s championship, the team and fans reckoned that they would dominate the sport in 2022. Instead, their performance dropped and porpoising came into play. Fast forward to 2023, the team is still recovering and has been keen on getting back to its winning days.

Max Verstappen and Red Bull on the other hand have prevented anyone from having a chance at getting the top spot on sunday. With Sergio Perez winning two races and Max winning ten races in total, the duo has ended the first half of the season having won all the races. This has never happened before and their levels of dominance are astounding. Toto Wolff is of the opinion that Red Bull’s pace increased even more in the last few races with their new update.

Here is what the Mercedes team principal had to say in an interview“It is what it is and I often say that it’s a meritocracy and it’s up to us to fight back. Did we expect that gap? Certainly not. I think with the last step of upgrade, it seems they have another advantage that they that were able to exploit,” he said. “But again, it always gets me back to the point of we have just got to dig in and do the best possible job,” he continued.

Max Verstappen won the 2023 Belgian GP by 22.3 seconds even though he started sixth with a grid penalty. This was his 8th F1 win in a row. When Sebastian Vettel was at Red Bull, he set a record by scoring 9 consecutive wins during the 2013 F1 season. After looking at Red Bull’s pace this season, Max breaking the record has become an imminent possibility. Ten years after it was initially created, it might be equaled soon.

What is even more interesting is the fact that Max Verstappen could break Sebastian Vettel’s record at his own home race coming up next in the Netherlands. The Dutch GP will be the first one to take place after the summer break gets over. Until them, the whole grid will be relaxing and enjoying after a busy first half. It will be interesting to see how the second half of the season turns out for Red Bull and Max.
