Lewis Hamilton’s time with Mercedes has been a record-breaking one, as the Briton set the record for most World Championships won with a single team. Hamilton also set the record for most wins with a team at 82, but his success with Mercedes has come to a jarring halt in the past two years.

With no wins since 2021, a lot of doubt has arisen regarding Hamilton’s bid for an eighth championship in the future. However, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff set these concerns to bed, claiming Hamilton can easily find his way back to the front if he gets a good car to drive.

There is a reason why Lewis has broken all records and won seven world titles; because his level is higher than others. If we give him a good car, one he trusts, then he can get back to the front. There is no doubt about that.

Hamilton did manage third in the championship in 2023, a step up from 2022 where he managed sixth. With an upgraded W15 coming his way this season. Hamilton could finally have a taste of the victory he has longed since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021.

Lewis Hamilton recalls considering retirement

Lewis Hamilton is statistically the most accomplished driver ever to compete in Formula 1. With 103 wins, the Briton also is a septuple world champion. Hamilton has achieved most of his highs with Mercedes, though there has been a slump in the past two years.

Retirement was never an option for the Mercedes driver as he has remained focused on his bid to return to the top of the sport. However, Hamilton does recall one point where he gave some thought to the prospect of quitting the sport, especially after so many years.

You’re being scrutinised all the time and I’m in a place in my life where there’s no way I can win. If I win a race, it’s: ‘Oh, he’s a seven-time world champion, you got 103 wins’. If I don’t do well, it’s… I can only lose at this point in life. So for sure there was a period of time when I was questioning whether I wanted to go through that.

Hamilton did not relent and stayed strong in his career, remaining with the Brackley-based team to race into 2025. The knighted driver is projected to be the second driver on the grid to race into his 40s along with longtime rival Fernando Alonso, who was right behind him in the 2023 standings.
