Max Verstappen is achieving historic success in Formula 1 this season with Red Bull. The two-time world champion has now made the record for the most wins in a row in F1 with ten race victories. This record was previously held by Sebastian Vettel. Now, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has reaffirmed that such records hardly matter from his perspective.
Wolff had previously claimed that Max Verstappen’s new records this season are unimportant. Now, the 51-year-old has once again come out and called Verstappen’s record of his winning streak as irrelevant. The Mercedes team boss insisted that he didn’t care about such statistics even during his dominant years. He said, as reported by Race.com, “For me, these kinds of records are completely irrelevant. They were irrelevant in our good days in Mercedes.”
The 51-year-old reckoned that he was unaware of how many consecutive wins Mercedes had during its eight straight Constructors’ titles. So much so, that Toto Wolff claimed to have not known that a record for most wins in a row even existed in Formula 1. The Austrian continued, “I don’t know how many races we’ve won or [how many] in a row. I didn’t even know there was a count on how many races you win in a row.”

Toto Wolff admits Max Verstappen is performing at a high level
Despite not being concerned about records, Toto Wolff admitted that the stats did show that Max Verstappen was delivering incredible performances this year. However, the 51-year-old mentioned that this success was partly due to the dominance of the Red Bull RB-19. The 51-year-old concluded, ” But the result shows that a great driver in a great car is competing at an extremely high level.”
Max Verstappen had ended Mercedes’ streak of dominance in 2021 by defeating Lewis Hamilton for the world title. However, the controversial title decider at Abu Dhabi was met with criticism by Toto Wolff and Mercedes. The Silver Arrows have fallen behind Red Bull in the pecking order since the start of the ground-effect era in Formula 1.
Thus, Toto Wolff has once again discarded Max Verstappen’s latest achievement. The 51-year-old has claimed that he does not see such records as significant. The Mercedes boss insisted that he didn’t keep track of his team’s own records over the years. It remains to be seen how Verstappen and Red Bull respond to these remarks.
