The Canadian GP witnessed two world champions go head-to-head for second place. Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton battled it for the runner-up spot behind Max Verstappen. During the first round of pitstops, Mercedes released Hamilton just in front of the Aston Martin. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has slammed Alonso’s reaction over the incident.
Lewis was released just before Alonso after the Spaniard got a quicker pitstop than his former teammate. The 38-year-old narrowly avoided the Aston Martin, forcing Fernando to act evasive. The 41-year-old got on the brakes right on time to prevent an incident and expressed his frustration straightaway. Toto Wolff, however, disagrees with the two-time world champion.
Wolff stated that Alonso dramatized the situation and exaggerated it out of proportion. The Austrian pointed out how the Spaniard tweaked his steering and got on the brakes to further amplify the incident. Albeit, Toto was not surprised as he believed that the 41-year-old was great at creating such drama. He said, “He is good at that, the cries of ‘I nearly hit him’… a bit of drama.”

Fernando Alonso defeated Lewis Hamilton for P2 in Canada
The Spanish driver lost out at the start of the Canadian GP to Lewis Hamilton as he fell back to third place. However, Fernando managed to get right on Hamilton’s tail after the incident in the pitlane. Subsequently, the 41-year-old retook second place from his arch-rival as Aston Martin continued to have the edge over the Silver Arrows.
Lewis had begun to close up to Alonso in the latter half of the race as the gap between them began to come down. However, Fernando was prepared to maintain his position, with the 41-year-old instructing the team to leave it to him. Unsurprisingly, the two-time world champion came home in P2 with a comfortable gap to the 7-time world champion.
Toto Wolff is unhappy with how Fernando Alonso tried to make the incident appear in the pitlane. The 41-year-old did not leave the opportunity to amplify the danger of the situation and indirectly urge race control to hand Mercedes a penalty. Nevertheless, the Spaniard did get ahead of Hamilton without waiting for any time penalties for the Mercedes driver.
