Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. F1 teams spend millions of dollars every year to develop their cars and find loopholes to exploit within the regulations. However, the FIA will crack down on a loophole that has allowed for flexible front and rear wings used by some teams. Mercedes Team boss Toto Wolff hinted that this could affect the dominant Red Bull RB-19.
Wolff hoped the new technical directive would impact the grid, including Red Bull from the upcoming Singapore GP. The Austrian pointed out that Aston Martin had already fallen behind with a less flexible front wing. However, the Mercedes team boss did not know which teams used it to a higher degree. He said, as reported by SilverArrows.net, “[Aston Martin] made a step backward with the wings moving less… I don’t know who is exploiting that to more [of a] degree…than others.”
However, the 51-year-old believed it would be ideal if the directive could slow down Red Bull Racing. So much so, Toto Wolff hoped to see the RB-19 lose a half a second per lap. However, the Austrian admitted that such a scenario was highly unlikely. Wolff explained, “But if maybe a Red Bull is half a second slower or something, that would be nice, but I don’t think it will be the case.”

Toto Wolff not a fan of records amidst Red Bull’s historic season
Mercedes dominated Formula 1 for multiple years in the Turbo Hybrid era. Wolff’s squad became the first F1 team to win eight consecutive Constructors’ titles. While Lewis Hamilton won six world championships during this period. However, this dominant run was ended by Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing.
Now, the tables have turned with Max Verstappen shattering records with the Milton Keynes-based team. However, it seems that Toto Wolff does not care about statistics and records. The 51-year-old recently mentioned that such numbers were irrelevant and only appeared on Wikipedia—a confusing statement by a team boss who oversaw a dominant period in F1.
Thus, Toto Wolff wants the new FIA technical directive to slow down the Red Bull RB-19. The Austrian team has remained undefeated this season, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez winning 12 and 2 races, respectively. However, it remains to be seen if the lack of flexi-wings at the Singapore GP could affect the Milton Keynes-based team.
