Defending f1 world champion Max Verstappen secured his seventh consecutive GP win in Budapest. After overtaking Lewis Hamilton into Turn one and pulling an impressive 33-second lead over Lando Norris, the Dutchman maintained his streak of wins. Red Bull’s victory, with teammate Sergio Perez finishing third, marked a record-breaking 12th consecutive triumph, surpassing McLaren’s legendary 1988 achievement.
Toto Wolff told Sky Sports that it was a meritocracy and they would fight back to win races and championships. He acknowledged the impressive pace of Max Verstappen, which was evident in both the current race and the long runs on Friday. Wolff likened Red Bull’s performance to Formula 2 against a Formula One car, acknowledging their exceptional job within the regulations.
“It is a meritocracy. We are going to fight back and win races and championships but today you’ve seen the pace that Max had,” says Toto Wolff. “It is like a field of Formula 2 cars against a Formula 1 [car]. They’ve done the best job. Within the regulations, they’ve done the best job,” he explained.
Max Verstappen’s pace set the bar for Mercedes, says Toto Wolff
Lewis Hamilton started slower than Max Verstappen but finished fourth for Mercedes. George Russell impressed with sixth place from 18th, owing to the new Tyre Allocation format. The W14 showed a better one-lap pace but a weaker race performance. However, Hamilton’s quick final stint narrowed the gap to Sergio Perez in the closing laps of the Hungarian GP.
When asked about Mercedes’ lack of pace on Sunday, Wolff remarked that Hamilton’s Saturday performance played a crucial role, and Mercedes trailed only Red Bull in the race. However, they had not been able to capitalize on their speed. Lewis Hamilton secured his 104th pole, whereas his teammate George Russell qualified in P18.
He mentioned that Hamilton’s qualifying lap was excellent, but there were mistakes with George Russell’s session. Wolff said Max Verstappen’s laps as the target but admitted they were far from reaching that level.
“I think clearly yesterday was a mega Lewis lap. We screwed it up with George in qualifying. I think we had the second quickest car today, if you look at the lap time profile. Where Verstappen is doing his laps and that needs to be the target and that is far off at the moment,” Wolff added.
