Mercedes had a difficult outing at the final Grand Prix weekend of the year as the Silver Arrows appeared to struggle throughout Sunday’s race. As the chequered flag was waved, Mercedes held on to their well-fought P2 in the constructor’s championship. Despite Ferrari’s cunning efforts at the end of the Grand Prix, the Prancing Horse failed to snatch the ‘Bridesmaids’ title away from the German team.

Toto Wolff, following the intense race, commented on the following 2024 season and promised the world a Mercedes resurgence.

I promise” that Mercedes are going to be reaching for the start next year.

After a challenging 2023 season, where the team failed to win a single Grand Prix (their first winless year since 2011), Mercedes will be hoping on all cylinders next year. After their seven-year domination ended in 2021, the team have failed to be a consistent challenger to the dominant pair of Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

Wolff’s carefully chosen words in his statement highlight the current performance gap between the two teams as the Team Principal employs the words “reaching the top”. This phrase alludes to the fact that the German team has a lot of ground to cover before matching the Red Bull team’s current level. Every neutral fan will be cheering the silver cars on as they will be charging at the two Red Bulls with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

Toto Wolff’s confident words ahead of their P2 clash against Ferrari at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

After the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the battle for the Constructors’ Championship intensified as Mercedes held a narrow 4-point lead over Ferrari. The final race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was to determine which team secured the position of the runner-up in the 2023 season. Despite a slow start to the 2023 season, Mercedes has consistently maintained the second position throughout the season. Ferrari, despite recent setbacks and several penalties to both their drivers over the course of the season, remained a formidable competitor until the very end.

In response to inquiries made following the Las Vegas GP about Mercedes’ prospects in securing P2 at Abu Dhabi, Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed confidence.

We're going there on pretty much equal points, we have a proper race director, so that should be fine.

The remark reflected Mercedes’ determination and strategic approach as they aimed to solidify their standing in the Constructors’ Championship.

At the Yas Marina circuit, despite Ferrari giving it their all – even a last-ditch attempt to protect Perez from the clutches of George Russel, the Silver Arrows stood tall and emerged as the well-deserved runners-up of 2023, staying true to Wolff’s reassuring words ahead of the Grand Prix.
