Lewis Hamilton’s struggles have continued during the Azerbaijan GP qualifying. The seven time world champion who is used to fighting for poles scrapped his way into Q3 after some needed help from his team mate, George Russell, who looked impressive yet again. Most of the teams were struggling with porpoising and bouncing but it was severe in case of both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Toto Wolff in a very honest interview with Karun Chandhok revealed that he doesn’t expect the porpoising to get better during this weekend or the one in Canada. Mercedes’ team Principal also was very well aware of the limitations with both the cars and said that he wasn’t ‘comfortable’ with the situation. It seems like Toto got it spot on as Lewis Hamilton needed slipstream from George Russell to get into Q3.
Lando Norris was a whisker away from making into Q3 and somewhat blamed Lewis Hamilton for driving slow unnecessary slow to get that slipstream from someone. Hamilton was also asked to keep the delta positive or there could be a penalty coming his way from the stewards. We never thought that Lewis Hamilton will have to towed by his team to get into Q3. The whole situation at Mercedes is pretty bizarre and will have to sort it out soon if they want to keep hold of Lewis Hamilton.

Toto Wolff revealed the reason behind what was a catastrophic qualifying session for Lewis Hamilton. The German lamented, ““Lewis tried a different specification of the bottom end. It didn’t work.”
“We know how the bouncing occurs. But we still don’t have a clear answer on how to stop it.“
“That’s why we are experimenting. That’s more important now than optimizing the car for a specific circuit in the short term,” as reported by gpblog.
Lewis Hamilton might be going through some difficult moments with the handling of the car but the more shocking thing has to be the lack of hunger this year around. Mercedes needs to lift the spirits of their star man or it can go downhill pretty soon.
