“We are learning important lesson,” Toto Wolff claims Mercedes’ struggles will lay down the foundation for long term success

Toto Wolff and Mercedes were expected to bounce back after what could have been flawless season but ended with heartbreak after Lewis Hamilton lost the title to Max Verstappen in bizarre and controversial situations. Mercedes has always been a step ahead of their competition in terms of the development of the car. Therefore, the issues around the car has come along as a surprise for most fans and aficionados.

The team has not been able to match Red Bull and Ferrari stride for stride and sometimes seen to be fighting with the likes of Alfa Romeo and Alpine. That is somewhere no one expected the German manufacturers but it’s a case of ‘it is what it is’ for them. The reality of the matter is that it is where they belong for the time being. There has been some progress ever since that disappointing Grand Prix but nothing substantial to push them closer to the top 2 in terms of pace.

Mercedes took a bold decision to develop a car with no sidepod which, from the initial evidence, was expected to give them substantial gains. That expectation has, sadly, not turned for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who have to hope for a mistake from Ferrari and Red Bull to sneak into the podium places. But, we shouldn’t expect Mercedes to stay in that position for long.

Toto Wolff has claimed that the struggles that Mercedes is facing this year will help them next year. He said, “We have had a few podiums but this is only when something goes wrong in the front. At the moment, I don’t want anything for us gifted.”

“Our team is only third on the road and that is why the fifth and sixth positions are where we belong but this is not where we want to be.”

“This is why, if you are inheriting a podium, it is nice, it is good for the points long-term but I don’t want any of that.”

“These are important lessons we are learning here, and it is going to be the basis of us performing long-term again,” as reported by gpfans.

Mercedes and Toto Wolff have their work cut out if they want to get back to the place where they want to be and we are used to seeing them. It’ll make it interesting if it could become a three horse title race somehow.
