“We need to keep chasing those final few tenths,” Toto Wolff hopes to close the gap on Red Bull and Ferrari at the French GP

Toto Wolff understands the fact that Mercedes has taken some giant steps in the last few weeks but still a way off from the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari. Despite finishing on the podium, Lewis Hamilton finished 40 odd seconds behind the pair of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. The seven time world champion should consider himself lucky to be on the podium.

Lewis Hamilton was looking set to finish P4 but an engine blowout for Carlos Sainz with a few laps to go presented him with an opportunity to sneak in the top 3. It always seems like Mercedes has to wait from top 4 drivers to be able to get on the podium. There has been only one instance where they looked extremely strong and that was the British GP.

But, we also need to understand where they found themselves at one point in time. At the beginning of the season, it was becoming difficult for them to get into Q3 and points scoring positions. From that aspect, the team from Germany has made huge strides in the right direction. That has helped them to cement P3 in the constructor’s championship and steer clear off McLaren and Alpine.

Toto Wolff wants Mercedes to keep chipping away at Red Bull and Ferrari and close the gap. He said, “Our understanding of the W13 is growing with every lap and it’s encouraging to see that reflected in our development and results. While we were quicker in Austria, we still weren’t quick enough to challenge at the front.”

We need to keep chasing those final few tenths and bringing new developments to the cars, including this weekend in France.”

Paul Ricard is a very different track and challenge. It has smooth tarmac and a wide range of corner types, along with long straights. The aim will be to make further inroads on the gap to the front and hopefully be back on the podium.

We all want Mercedes to get into the mix and make it a three way battle to win the upcoming races. But, if we talk realistically, we might have to wait a little longer to see that.
