‘We studied Manchester United’s failures’: Toto Wolff admits to learning lessons from great teams as Mercedes prepares to bounce back

Cristiano Ronaldo and Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff and Mercedes have set records in the last decade that might prove very difficult to beat for any team. But, as we all know, time changes and we all have to adapt to it. This has been that sort of season for a Mercedes team which have been used to fighting for poles and wins on a weekly basis. FIA announced a massive overhaul in regulations this year, which provided an opportunity to other teams to make a comeback.

Mercedes signed Lewis Hamilton back in 2014 and the rest has been history for the German manufacturers. The team has gone on to win 8 constructor’s championships and 7 drivers’ titles in the last 8 years. Lewis Hamilton came in as a breath of fresh air as went on to win 6 out of those 7 titles. This is something which we had only seen Michael Schumacher in this modern era of racing.

Toto Wolff took full advantage of the changes in regulations back in the day to get ahead of the competition but he has got the taste of his own medicine this year around. Mercedes have not been able to get going after the changes and Red Bull have put them to the sword. This shouldn’t be concerning for Toto Wolff right but it could be if it continues for a longer period as it is turning out to be the case with English Premier League’s giant, Manchester United.

Toto Wolff says that he did study Manchester United’s failures to understand the psyche of a big team after such dominance

Toto Wolff admitted to studying Manchester United’s failure to avoid making the same mistakes. He said, “I studied why great teams were not able to repeat great title [runs].”

“No sports team in any sport has ever won eight consecutive world championship titles, and there are many reasons for that, and what is at the core is the human.”

“The human gets complacent. You are not energised in the same way you were before. You are maybe not as ambitious.”

“I had so many periods, so many episodes in my life that I would judge as difficult, that this is not on the same scale.”

Mercedes are one of the few teams in F1’s history that have dominated the sport on that level. Therefore, it’s important for them to make a comeback and make it a three horse for the title next year around. If they don’t do it they could like battered by Red Bull just like Manchester United was by Brentford.
