“We’re on a different strategy than the other cars”: Max Verstappen dishes on the X-factor that helps him win the Mexican Grand Prix

Max Verstappen successfully destroyed the “Mexican GP” curse by securing victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on Sunday, after winning pole position at the Qualifying the day before. Verstappen created a record by winning his fourteenth Grand Prix of this season in Mexico City, and it was an evening of celebration for everyone at the Red Bull pits, thanks to the Dutchman’s excellent speed and clear-cut tactics.

Right ahead of the Main Race in Sergio Perez’s home country, fans were in favor of Lewis Hamilton for snatching the lead during the first lap, since it has been seen that the driving qualifying P3 always gets the win at this circuit. But Verstappen proceeded to prove all the speculations wrong as he got off to a great start, fended off attacks from Mercedes’ George Russell, and managed to build a gap between him and the rest of the grid.

When it comes to winning a race at a tricky circuit such as the one in Mexico City, it is not just the racing that gets the driver through. Red Bull’s tactics had a huge part in helping Max Verstappen go for the trophy with a well-framed tyre strategy. Thus, while explaining how Max Verstappen left the rest of the grid behind him, and took the lead of the standings, he said his team was following an entirely different strategy when compared to the others.

While the two Silver Arrows of Mercedes had shown great speed throughout the weekend in Mexico, it was Max Verstappen who clinched pole position in the Qualifying by putting a brilliant laptime on Saturday. And then, the Mercedes racers vowed to try their best to overtake Verstappen during the race, but the Dutchman had a good start and managed to leave about 2.0 seconds between himself and Lewis Hamilton by the end of the first lap.

Speaking of the start to the Mexican Grand Prix, Max Verstappen said, “The first stint of the race was critical today and we managed to stay in the lead after turn one. We were obviously on a different strategy to the cars around us and we had to look after our tyres a lot.

Red Bull has achieved their first World Constructors’ Championship this year after 2013, and if the F1 pundits are to be believed, the British team will only improve their results next season. Thus, Mercedes and Ferrari are going to have a huge task ahead of them if they want to get to the lead of the ranks, and that is–to get past Red Bull.
