“We’ve never been close,” Kevin Magnussen drops bombshell on his future relationship with Hulkenberg

“We’ve never been close,” Kevin Magnussen drops bombshell on his future relationship with Hulkenberg

In a shocking announcement that was made right at the tail end of the recently-ended 2022 season, Haas confirmed everyone’s fear that they will not renew Mick Schumacher contract. Hence, the 23-year-old, who had just stepped into F1 in 2021, found himself unemployed and without a seat at any of the teams since all other places had been filled up already. And in place of Mick Schumacher, Haas has decided to recruit Nico Hulkenberg–the German racer who will be walking out of F1 exile after a long wait since 2019.

The last time Nico Hulkenberg had raced as a regular driver for one of the Formula 1 teams, it had been three years ago, as Daniel Ricciardo‘s teammate in Renault. Then, he spent some time filling in for other racers when the Covid-19 pandemic struck and some drivers had fallen sick. With Hulkenberg’s vast experience to amp his performance up, Haas expects some great results from the German who could never win a podium finish in all his years in F1 despite displaying his really good racing skills.

But unfortunately for Kevin Magnussen, he is not exactly friends with the man who is all-set to come in as his teammate for the upcoming season. Magnussen himself had been brought out of his F1 exile a year back when Haas decided to severe ties with Nikita Mazepin and hire the Danish racer. And it can very well be said that Haas struck gold with Kevin Magnussen’s recruitment because his results have been a major highlight for the team in 2022. Now, Kevin Magnussen is outlining his dynamics with Nico Hulkenberg and how he wants to maintain a civil relationship with the man to whom he has once said, “suck my ba***”.

Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen

Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg’s massive fallout after their clash in the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2017 is still fresh in most of the F1 fans’ memories. The two had quite a conversation at that time as Nico Hulkenberg called Kevin “the most unsporting driver on the grid” and in reply, Magnussen told him to “suck my balls”.

But Formula 1 is a pretty interesting sport where everything changes with time and Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg are now all-set to start 2023 as teammates. Speaking on how his relationship with Hulkenberg will affect their racing, Kevin Magnussen said, “We’ve never been close, in the past or anything. But in Bahrain, we met in the airport and kind of caught up for the first time. A lot of people think we have some beef going on, but we really don’t. I don’t think you need to be best pals.”

While Hulkenberg is coming back with a contract for a regular racing seat in Formula 1, his former Renault teammate Daniel Ricciardo will be walking away from the racetrack for one season as he has been appointed as Red Bull’s reserve driver. Now, it only remains to be seen how Nico Hulkenberg makes use of his opportunity to shine in F1 once again as the new Haas racer on the grid.
