As the end of the 2023 Formula One season is coming close, it is now time for the race that everyone has been waiting for with baited breath–the Las Vegas GP. The ambitious project that has been touted as the most expensive F1 Grand Prix in the history of the sport is scheduled to take place during the weekend from 16th to 19th November. It will be the final piece in the FIA’s plans for an American takeover by Formula 1. If the Las Vegas GP turns out to be what it is being envisioned to be, then Formula 1 will be truly an international sport.

The slow spread of F1’s popularity in the United States has occurred due to many reasons. One of the major ones is the hit Netflix series called ‘Drive to Survive’ that documented the paddock lives of the drivers and their team personnel. It gave the US viewers an insider look into F1 and turned many of them into fans. Cashing in on this opportunity, the FIA introduced the first-ever Miami GP last year and it turned out to be a wild success.

And now, the Las Vegas Grand Prix has been planned to give all the American viewers the Formula 1 show that is mixed with the true American spirit of the Las Vegas Strip. The entire 3.8 miles circuit is being built on the Strip and it will be a night race on a track flanked by casinos on both sides. When is F1 in Las Vegas going to take place?

With the wrapping up of the Formula 1 circus in Brazil underway, it will not be long before they arrive in Las Vegas for the impending race. The Grand Prix will follow the traditional F1 race format as the Brazilian GP was the last Sprint weekend for this season.

But even though the format will be a traditional one, the race timings of the Las Vegas GP are quite different. It will be the first Grand Prix since the South African GP in 1985 to take place on a Saturday night. The schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Thursday 16th November

Free Practice 1 – 20:30 – 21:30 (local time)

Friday 17th November

Free Practice 2 – 00:00 – 01:00 (local time)

Free Practice 3 – 20:30 – 21:30 (local time)

Saturday 18th November

Qualifying – 00:00 – 01:00 (local time)

Las Vegas Grand Prix – 22:00 – 00:00 (local time)

Why is the Las Vegas GP schedule being called ‘crazy’?

The Las Vegas Grand Prix schedule is quite contrary to what the F1 fans are normally used to. The race will take place during the Saturday night while the third Free Practice Session and the Qualifying will be held during the ungodly hours of Friday. This has invited several protests from the fans on social media who have joked that their sleep schedule will be ruined because of the Formula 1 race in Las Vegas.

With the Las Vegas GP being the 21st race in the F1 roster for 2023, the season is nearing its end. The Emilia Romagna GP was cancelled due to the floods and the Chinese GP was called off because of their stringent COVID-19 restrictions.

Thus, a season which was initially planned to have been the longest with 24 races, turned out to have only 21 in the end. And Max Verstappen has won 17 of the 20 races that have been held till now. While he has already been crowned the season Champion, it remains to be seen if he still makes a go for the title of the winner at the first-ever Las Vegas GP.
