“When you’ve had a few bad races, it hurts mentally”: Jenson Button opines on a ‘demotivated’ Lewis Hamilton

From British Formula 1 racer Jenson Button has dissected the mental state that Lewis Hamilton might be in, as the seven-time World Champion has just been through what fans are calling as one of his worst racing streaks in his entire career as an F1 driver. While Lewis Hamilton had almost always been in the top 3 in the previous Grands Prix which were held during the last few years, he is struggling to get a points finish in this new season of F1 2022.

Winning can become a habit for those who get used to it. For Lewis Hamilton, staying at the lead of a Grand Prix has been a common thing in the previous Grands Prix as he has been an undisputed Champion on the tracks for seven years. As Lewis has equalled Michael Schumacher’s feat of achieving seven World Championship victories, he has created history, and is deservedly regarded as one of the greatest racers of all time.

For a racer of Lewis’ acumen, it would obviously be quite unacceptable to think that he has not received a single race win in the eight races that have taken place this year. Thus, 2009 World Championship winner Jenson Button recently commented on how he feels Lewis Hamilton might be “hurting mentally” as he has not at all been able to perform at the level of his fans’ expectations in this season.

As a vastly experienced and skilled seven-time F1 title-winner, Lewis Hamilton’s ego has allegedly suffered a massive blow with the advent of newbie George Russell in Mercedes. Previously, Lewis has always been the first choice of Mercedes when it comes to the question of which team driver would win the race. As Lewis Hamilton has been competing for the World Championship title since 2014, Mercedes has backed him on many occasions and asked the second driver to yield his position to Lewis so that he could pass through.

But now, Lewis is not being able to perform so well, and newcomer George Russell is outshining him at every race. This sudden importance that Russell, Mercedes’ second driver, is enjoying over Lewis, is not sitting well with the 37-year-old veteran racer.

Speaking of what Lewis Hamilton might currently be going through, Jenson Button said, “He’s been fighting for a world championship since 2014 and his team-mate has come, young upstart George Russell, and he’s been competitive.”

He further continued, “Because George is driving a car that is actually better than what he was used to [at Williams], it’s given him confidence and he can push a bit harder. Whereas Lewis has probably not got so much confidence in the car to be able to extract the maximum out of it. And when you’ve had a few bad races, it hurts mentally. This is a mental sport. It’s not just physical.
