Sergio Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 and appeared as a messiah as the second driver struggles for the Austrian squad seemed to come to a close. However, these struggles did not stop for long as his performances slumped after the Miami GP in 2023 and continued into the ongoing season. This has now led the 34-year-old to claim that he has been on the back foot for the past few races and wants to prove his worth at the Spanish GP.

In the past few weekends, Sergio Perez has been trundling around the rear of the pack. Moreover, this subpar form has led him to score a mere four points in the last three outings. These led to fans criticizing his performances in the RB20, which has been the benchmark in 2024 so far.

Subsequently, this urged the former six-time race winner to assert that he is looking forward to the race in Spain and show his worth to the grid.

I think we've had more than 1 issue in the last few races, with the car, preparation and so on. We've been in the back foot, so I'm tremendously looking forward to get back to the level we had a few races ago. I believe we can get back to that level.
Sergio Perez said in the build up to the Spanish GP

The Mexican explained that in each of his last few races, there has been more than one issue affecting his side of the garage. The issues have made him go on the back foot, and now he wants to pounce back and showcase his skills to the world at the Spanish GP.

Sergio Perez reveals his intentions of finishing his career with Red Bull

Despite Perez’s lack of results, the 34-year-old recently earned a two-year contract extension at Red Bull. This move made experts question whether he was the right guy for the job. Amidst all such doubts, Perez made it clear that he wanted to end his career with Red Bull.

The Mexican reckoned that he still has a lot to give in F1.

Certainly when you look at Fernando[Alonso] or even Lewis[Hamilton], there’s a long way to go [in my career]. But I think I didn’t sign my last contract. I don’t think I’ve done that. So, to be honest I don’t really think about that – but what I’m pretty sure about is that I want to finish my career at Red Bull. There were other options out there, but for me, my plan A, B and C was definitely to stay at Red Bull.
Sergio Perez said in the pre-race press conference in Canada

The 34-year-old took the example of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, and how these drivers are competing at the sharp end, despite being in their late 30s or 40s. This made him realize that he still has a long way to go and intends to finish his career with Red Bull.

However, Perez’s recent form may not be able to earn him a seat at Red Bull for longer if Daniel Ricciardo ramps up his performances. Thus, he has the task at hand to bounce back from his dip in performance and help the Austrian marque claim the constructor’s championship.
