Qualifying for the Spanish GP has concluded. After a tough contest at the front of the grid, Lando Norris secured pole, followed by Max Verstappen in second. However, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton had an impressive session as the seven-time world champion finished in third place. Team Principal Toto Wolff rejoiced over Hamilton’s result.

Wolff claimed that Lewis Hamilton has always been energized. The Austrian billionaire reckoned that Qualifying could’ve gone either way for the Silver Arrows due to the close battle for pole. Toto Wolff asserted that he was happy to see the seven-time world champion have a positive result before Sunday’s race.

I think [Lewis] has always been energized. You can see today it can swing one direction or the other. I’m happy that it went good for him today.

Moreover, the Mercedes team boss highlighted that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell might’ve finished in P4 and P5 instead considering the marginal gap to Ferrari. Russell even had an outburst on the team radio over Hamilton mid-way through the final session.

3rd and 4th, it could’ve been 5th and 6th because it was so close with the Ferraris.

Toto Wolff claims Mercedes might’ve been ‘too optimistic’ after Friday practice

Mercedes seemed to be aiming to fight for victory at the Spanish GP. Lewis Hamilton had claimed that the team was not far from the mix at the front. It appears that the Silver Arrows will have a tough battle against pole-sitter Lando Norris and Max Verstappen to potentially win its first race of the season.

Toto Wolff claimed that the Silver Arrows were not three-tenths behind the leader on Friday. The Austrian billionaire admitted that the team might’ve been too optimistic of its prospects. Nevertheless, Wolff was satisfied with a ‘solid’ result for Hamilton and Russell.

Three tenths to the leaders, it didn’t look that way yesterday. But, maybe we’ve been too optimistic with yesterday’s performance. Today was a different day. Overall it’s a solid result.
Toto Wolff affirmed

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will be hoping to potentially take victory in Barcelona on Sunday. However, Norris and Verstappen might have an upper hand in this battle. As such, fans would need to wait and see how the Silver Arrows perform in the main race.
