Mercedes has continued to face problems in the third season of the ground-effect era. Team Principal Toto Wolff has been frustrated throughout the season due to this downgrade in performance. The 52-year-old was recently under fire from Red Bull CEO due to his comments on Max Verstappen. Hence, the Austrian has since responded to the comments from Oliver Mintzlaff.
Toto Wolff had channeled out his frustrations by claiming that even the ‘greatest magician’ couldn’t fix the W15’s performance issues. However, the team boss was continually speaking about potentially signing Max Verstappen. Due to this, Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff called out the 52-year-old over these comments. Additionally, Mintzlaff asked Wolff to focus on Mercedes’ issues rather than focusing on Verstappen’s performance in the 2024 season.
Hence, Toto Wolff since responded to these comments from Mintzlaff. The team principal claimed that he was unaware of what the CEO was responding to. Additionally, the Austrian highlighted that all these comments thrown towards him were irrelevant to him. Hence, the 52-year-old declined to take responsibility for his previous comments and denied any allegations from Mintzlaff as well.
I don't know what this guy is reacting to. It's not relevant to me.Toto Wolff said, as reported by racingnews365.com.
Toto Wolff dismisses rumors of meeting Max Verstappen at Miami GP
Lewis Hamilton‘s move to Ferrari created a vacancy in Mercedes that had put forth Max Verstappen as a potential candidate for the Silver Arrows. The team principal hadn’t denied the possibility of such a move for the reigning world champion. Verstappen was also rumored to meet up with Toto Wolff after the Miami GP. However, the 52-year-old has since denied the rumors and provided clarity.
I can't comment too much on it, but there will be no meeting on Monday.Toto Wolff mentioned.
Additionally, Wolff claimed that Verstappen was the ‘target’ for all the teams to acquire from the coming season. The 52-year-old did accept that the 26-year-old shouldn’t leave Red Bull for any other team for now, due to the latter’s success in recent seasons. The Dutchman had also made it clear that not even $250 Million would make him move to Mercedes. Finally, the Austrian asserted that there were no decisions to be made regarding the world champion’s future in Formula 1 for now.
Max is a target for all teams. I have said before that I don't think he should leave in 2025. He is the top driver at the moment and has to make a decision. Perhaps there is not even a decision to make and things will stay as they are. But that is no guide for us.Toto Wolff concluded.
Max Verstappen’s dream of scoring a perfect season in 2024 was crushed by Ferrari and McLaren. Three different teams scored race victory since the season’s beginning and leveled out the playing field. Mercedes however has constantly underperformed since the season’s beginning and lost the chance to overtake McLaren in the constructors’ championship. The updates bought to the Miami GP didn’t provide substantial results to the team either.
