Max Verstappen‘s disastrous Italian GP highlighted just how far Red Bull has fallen from their early-season dominance. Starting seventh on the grid, the Dutchman only managed to finish the 53-lap race in P6. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff claims the race in Monza was Verstappen’s worst race in many years.
Toto Wolff was surprised by the surprising change in Red Bull’s performance compared to the start of the year. He observed that the team dominated the early races, with Max Verstappen winning seven out of the first fourteen races. However, their performance has significantly declined since then, which has been surprising to everyone.
It’s really strange, this is not the dominant Red Bull of the beginning of the year.Toto Wolff said, as reported by Formulapassion.it
Toto Wolff remarked that Max Verstappen managed to maintain strong performance for a while due to his skill. However, he acknowledged that this race was his worst in many years where nothing went well due to multiple factors. He mentioned that while he can state his opinion, it’s up to Red Bull to optimize their own performance.
I think Max was able to keep it up for a while with his skill, but this is probably one of their worst races in many years. But who am I to say?Toto Wolff added.
Toto Wolff believes Red Bull will bounce back from recent performance slump
Toto Wolff noted Ferrari and Mercedes also struggled recently, so it’s too early to dismiss Red Bull’s chances of recovery. He emphasized that Red Bull has a strong and capable team, and despite being fierce rivals he’s confident that they will have better races in the future.
We had two years without anything working for us. It was the same for Ferrari a few races ago, so I don’t think we can write Red Bull off. They have a formidable team and I’m sure there will be better races for them.Toto Wolff stated.
Certainly, Toto Wolff believes that just because Red Bull had a few bad races, it doesn’t mean they won’t bounce back. He reckoned they have the ability to recover and perform well again, just like other teams have done before.
