Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has backed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win the 2024 drivers’ championship. Wolff has claimed that Verstappen will prevail over McLaren’s Lando Norris this season.

Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have had fairly contrasting fates this campaign. Norris has had the stronger car with the Papayas but has failed to win more than three races. On the other hand, Verstappen has not won in any of the past nine races but has been consistent in his efforts so far.

The Dutchman leads the title race with a hefty lead of 57 points to second-placed Norris. Toto Wolff has hence said that the last five races will not be enough for the Brit to bridge the gap in the championship.

Verstappen must nevertheless get back to winning races if he wishes to cement his chances here on. The race in Mexico will feature an exciting battle between the two drivers in the quest for greater points and wins.

The feeling is not great yet. I am a few laps short compared to most of the others, so I will have to catch up. But that is just not a great feeling. It is just difficult to get a good feeling on this circuit, because there is little grip.

Lando Norris told F1TV

Norris complained of the inadequacy of grip in the MCL38 while making his runs around the Autodromo Hermanos racing circuit. He has also admitted to finding it difficult to come to terms with the sudden, fast-paced nature of the track.

The final practice session will be a determining factor for the Brit, who has been in pole position six times this season. Norris now seeks redemption to make up for his lost chances at Austin last weekend.
